Description

These dazzling, translucent candies are perfect for decorating cakes, gifting, or simply enjoying as a sweet treat. Their shimmering appearance and delightful crunch make them a showstopper!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 tsp clear vanilla extract (or other flavoring of choice)
  • Gel food coloring (optional)
  • Edible glitter or luster dust (optional)

Instructions

  • Prepare the setup:

    • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
    • Have your food coloring and flavoring ready for quick addition.
  • Cook the candy syrup:

    • In a medium saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, and water.
    • Heat over medium heat, stirring gently until the sugar dissolves.
    • Stop stirring and increase the heat slightly. Attach a candy thermometer to the pan and cook until the mixture reaches 300°F (hard crack stage).
  • Add flavor and color:

    • Remove the saucepan from heat. Stir in the vanilla extract and a drop or two of food coloring if desired. Be careful, as the mixture will be very hot.
  • Shape the candy:

    • Pour the hot syrup onto the prepared baking sheet. Spread it thinly and evenly with a spatula for crystal shards or use molds for shaped candies.
    • Sprinkle edible glitter or luster dust over the candy for added sparkle.
  • Cool and break:

    • Allow the candy to cool completely at room temperature.
    • If making shards, break the candy into pieces with a hammer or knife.
  • Serve and store:

    • Serve immediately or store in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.

Notes

  • Customize flavors: Use peppermint, almond, or citrus extracts to create unique variations.
  • Add sparkle: For extra brilliance, lightly dust the finished candy with luster dust using a clean brush.
  • Safety tip: Be cautious when handling hot sugar syrup to avoid burns.
